Trending Upward and Beyond: eSports

Esports has been evolving and growing rapidly within the last 2 years. Staple esports games are starting to plateau in fan growth and new games are trending to the top of the table. Young adults and children are already expressing their love for the new cultural movement, not just in the U.S., but throughout the whole world. Fortnite, Realm Royale, League of Legends, CS:GO, PUBG, DOTA2, and many more titles have only been growing in investor and fan support.

League of Legends has developed the first Player’s Union led by veteran players who have had 5 or more years of experience each. Player representation and job security has started to develop further. Franchising has been established by most leagues. Similar to leagues like the NBA, a large amount of money was dedicated by the team owners to making the leagues succeed. That dedication has attracted other organizations to sponsor and invest in the longevity of the league. Viewership is at an all time high. Esports viewership has exceeded other sporting events’ numbers, most notably the NBA Finals. Celebrities are accepting the culture, inviting streamers to play and attracting their own fan base to the wave. As the new generations accept esports, the viewership of traditional sports has declined as a reaction. ESPN has seen an estimated 15 million viewership decline since 2013.

Esports has almost permeated the mainstream as their fans are almost all under the age of 35. This cultural wave is taking over at a phenomenal rate. Young children are starting to look up to streamers on platforms like Twitch and Mixer, and those streamers are making money unfathomable to the previous generations. The esports sector is predicted to grow to over a 100 billion dollar industry within the next decade and there’s no sign of it stopping.
