Recently Overwatch unveiled an incredible idea in the form of a new charity skin where all the proceeds would go to breast cancer research. How it works is from May 8th until May 21st players will be able to buy a signature pink Mercy skin and 100 of the proceeds will be donated. It is both a genius and generous move seeing as Overwatch players love buying skins and now they can do so while also giving to a great cause. The plan is working too. In a recent Overwatch Twitch charity event, streamers donated $70,000 in less than an hour. Unfortunately, there apparently might be a catch.
According to recent reports, Sony is likely taking a cut of the profits from the new Overwatch Skin. Fans managed to notice that the product description for the Sony version of the game differed from the others. For example, when purchasing the skin via the PlayStation Store in the UK the game cost £12.99 but the product description says that only £10.12 goes to charity as that is what Blizzard receives from your purchase. In the US the product description is similar saying, “Blizzard Entertainment will donate 100 percent of the proceeds that it receives from Sony PlayStation for your purchase.” At this point, it appears as though Sony is taking roughly a 20 percent cut of the proceeds that go to charity.
This news certainly does not bode well for Sony as nobody loves the idea of a powerful corporation sticking its hands in the pocket of a noble charity. Of course, we still don’t know the full story just yet. The product description merely points out Sony’s standard fee and there’s no word yet on whether or not Sony has waived this fee for this particular instance. It could also be the case that Sony will acknowledge the public outcry and do what is right and make sure all of the money is going to charity even on their end. Either way, it remains to be seen what Sony will do to remedy this.
