Yesterday marked the beginning of the Inaugural Overwatch League Grand Finals in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Activision Blizzard has made their mark on the esports scene. The company has shipped almost their entire team to New York to ensure the success of the event. Media, fans, and C level business partners came to watch the playoffs live and to join a summit hosted by Activision Blizzard, held in New York, to discuss business ventures and learn about the future of Overwatch Esports.
Today, franchise owners will be meeting with Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s CEO, about possible expansions to the league. With all the behind the scenes work being handled by the parent company, Blizzard has made sure to put their best foot forward to ensure that the fans are thoroughly satisfied. The Overwatch set from the Burbank studios could not be brought over, so Blizzard has created a new set that stretches as wide as the floor of the stage. The investments to the set were incredible: however, the investment matches the interest as the tickets for both days this weekend were sold out.
Activision Blizzard has set their full focus on marketing the teams competing in the grand finals. The Philadelphia Fusion have home court advantage and a large fanbase in attendance. Comcast Xfinity paid for the travel of over 100 Fusion fans to the event for both days. We were able to see the massive amount of attendance and viewership numbers just from the first day.
