With the esports world continuously growing, leagues are able to expand their size — and quickly. Blizzard recently revealed eight new teams would be coming to the Overwatch League for its second season. The teams are from all over the world including the US, Canada, China and France.
Kicking off its first season last year, Overwatch featured twelve teams, costing the league around $20 million. The additional teams will expand the league to 20 teams and cost between $30 to $60-million, according to ESPN. It is not confirmed when season two will kick off.
Season one showed promise for season two though and was full of suspense and achievements. While viewership dwindled over the season — a seven month stint, the Finals drew an 861,000 audience over two days. The season showed the world its ability to excite and hold viewers attention as the long-shots scored the upsets, new characters released and upset the balance of knowing how others play and a number of patches that changed the game.
The new season holds excitement for fans, and the eight new teams offer opportunities to bring in new fans as cities gain a local champion to cheer for. Blizzard does eventually plan to install home arenas for teams across the country, but it will most likely rely on the profit gained over the years from the leagues. For now, fans simply have to wait for the date confirmation for season two and see what the new teams can bring to the table.
