PlayStation Plus routinely gives free games to subscribers every month, just one more perk that goes along with the $10 subscription. The deal with the free games is that you only have access to them until your subscription with the service runs out. So while they aren’t exactly what you could call ‘free’ in the long run, they are most definitely a welcome feature.
The average player will spend at least 30 hours before they finish the campaign and considering that the game’s story was filled with breathtaking characters, it’s an experience no PS Plus subscribers should miss out on if they haven’t already tried the game before.
Mafia III was released in 2016, a whopping six years after Mafia II redefined sandbox games.
About Mafia III
Mafia III is an open world crime drama that stars Lincoln Clay, a veteran who returns from combat in the Vietnam War to find his city New Bordeaux – a recreation of 1900s New Orleans – embroiled in underworld crime organizations. After a deal with a mafia mob boss goes haywire, Clay decides to go on a merciless path of vengeance, promising to kill everyone that stood between him and the mob boss.
The writing side of the game has been lauded as some of the best of the current generation. Players are not given a superficial story of vengeance, instead developer Hangar 13 decided to think past the clichéd storylines and spice things up with their social commentary of post-Vietnam America.
The world is vast and has an open world sandbox experience. You drive around taking missions from several NPCs, make money, customize your character and complete the many side missions. Mafia III rewards players who pay particular attention to stealth but doesn’t hold them back in terms of firepower as Clay has access to a massive arsenal of weapons to mow down lines of enemies.
The difficulty levels are varied and challenging, making it all the more satisfying to defeat waves of enemies that don’t hold back any punches. Clay runs several side businesses and collects money from “Kickbacks”. Players get access to kickbacks by disrupting enemy rackets and handing them over to one of Lincoln’s three underbosses – the dynamics of who gets to control which racketeering business ties into the overall storyline.
The gameplay and storyline were praised by critics and sales were booming on the PS4. Mafia III still trends today and becoming August’s freebie is definitely something gamers can look forward to.
