News that the new Call of Duty will feature a Battle Royale mode has certainly caused a stir in the gaming world. With just about everyone playing some form of a Battle Royale game from athletes, rappers, and your middle school siblings, it makes sense that Call of Duty would want to cash in the craze. Now rumors have been circulating from site Gaming Intel, saying that the Nintendo switch will have a separate Call of Duty Battle Royale game separate from Call of Duty Black Ops 4. Now, before you get too excited keep in mind that this game would be a Battle Royale style gameplay only and feature no campaign, no zombies, and no traditional online multiplayer.
If you read all of that and are still invested, let’s talk about what exactly this means, because being strictly a Battle Royale game hasn’t stopped PUBG or Fortnite (what PVE mode?) so how bad could it be? In fact, this could honestly be a huge selling point for the already successful Nintendo Switch. Implying that this Call of Duty Battle Royale experience will actually be fun, having a Battle Royale game on the switch can drastically increase the number of people who will want to go out of their way to buy the console. In addition, a successful Call of Duty Battle Royale would make for the perfect on the go Battle Royale experience. Let’s be honest, it’s great that both Fortnite and PUBG have mobile versions that allow you to play your favorite Battle Royale game on the move, but if we’re being honest neither version is as good as playing on the console or PC. Since the Switch has masterfully combined the console and mobile experience, having a Battle Royale game that is actually worthwhile would mean that Nintendo would corner that market on having a Battle Royale game that is equally fun both at home and on the go. The fact that the game won’t come with a campaign or traditional multiplayer shouldn’t be a problem as long as the price is right, or even free.
Of course, at the end of the day, this all relies on the fact that this new Call of Duty Battle Royale will actually, you know, be good, a fact that very much remains to be seen. You should also keep in mind that Activision has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors, so this very well could not be happening at all. For now, all that can be done is to mark your calendar for May 17th and hope for the best.
